Vernacular Architecture



Vernacular term derived from the Latin word "Vernaculus", which has a meaning of "Indigenous". Vernacular Architecture was the beginning of the science of architecture standing. Vernacular Architecture is an architecture that derived from the region itself. Beginning of vernacular architecture is an evolving human culture that began to develop science to be able make ends meet such as the need "a Place of life, Safety, and Worship". Vernacular architecture has a traditional nature, So the materials for making a building just used modest material.

Definitions by various experts architects about the vernacular architecture:
  • According Paul Oliver in his book "Dwellings" vernacular architecture is a "folk architecture, and by the people, but not for the people".
  • According Frank Lloyd Wright's vernacular architecture is a "building people who grew up in responding to actual needs, fitted into the environment by people who correspond with their real feelings."
